Maya, Python and Wings IDE

I've recently moved away from the Maya Script Editor for my Maya scripting and started using Wing IDE, which is great in that it has full code auto-complete, debugging support and can be rigged up to execute code in Maya straight from the IDE window using a simple server setup.

Here are a couple of guides I found handy in getting Wings to work with my Maya install:

Roman Body

More work on my Roman legionary- added a body and some props.

Still afew elements to refine- the sandals, hands and shirt could use abit more TLC...

Zbrush Practice - Roman Bust

Inspired by those pesky Romans in the Asterix Comics. Speed sculpt created in Zbrush.

That's one worried roman.

Tank!

Quick little tank model! Made in Maya.

Python, COM and windows 8

Recently I got myself a new laptop which came pre-installed with windows 8. Rather than instantly wiping it out and installing windows 7, I decided to give it a try.

After getting over the initial shock, I installed all my usual python tools and started setting up my scripts... only to suddenly be stopped dead in my tracks when all my comtypes related scripts no longer worked, coming up with something along the lines of:

TypeError: '_Dispatch' object is not callable

Lame! Anyway, if anyone else encounters this, the solution turned out to be running the Python command line in XP compatibility mode.

To set this up in windows 8, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to your control panel.
  2. Click on the 'Programs' category.
  3. Click on 'Run programs made for previous versions of windows'
  4. Step through the troubleshooter, selecting your Python command line as the target program.
And it should all work again!

California!

A week ago my wife and I bid farewell to the land of Kangaroos, Koalas and drop-bears* and made our way  to sunny California, where people drive on the right side of the road and everybody is in the movie business**.

Now to find a job!

* Koalas that don't know how to hold onto a gum-tree and sleep at the same time are colloquially known as drop-bears.
**Apparently.

Rise of the Guardians- The Video Game

So... this is what I have been working on since leaving Bluetongue Entertainment in 2011:

KitchenSinkCube SKU coming soon...

Rise of the Guardians is finally out in North America on pretty much any platform you want. Almost any platform anyway. I was one of two level artists for the duration of the project, and I've updated my portfolio website with screenshots of some of my work.

The game is based closely on the environs of the Dreamworks movie of the same name. In all there were roughly 35 levels that had to be created for the final game which meant that the turn around for each of them was pretty rapid. My favorite level to work on was the snowy Yeti Village. There is something really fun about making ramshackle bridges across deadly, deadly ravines:

The game was developed by Torus Games and published by D3Publisher.
